Engineer Precise Genome Editing Tools for Treatment of Human Genetic Diseases

Dr. Gao’s research program lies at the interface of chemical biology and biomolecular engineering with a primary focus on biomolecules produced by microbes for their applications to human health, agriculture, and energy. The recently discovered microbial ribonucleoprotein, CRISPR/Cas9, in complex with a single guide RNA, has been extensively applied to mediate genome editing and revolutionize biomedical research. In this talk, she will firstly show the development of cationic lipid-mediated in vivo delivery of Cas9–guide RNA complexes for treatment of hearing the loss in a mouse model of human genetic deafness. Next, she will present the engineering of single base genome editing tools with high precision for potential applications in disease modeling and therapies.
